A cloud inversion occurs when a layer of warmer air above "caps" the cooler air below, essentially keeping it from rising. It most likely happened this time because fog that has been shrouding parts of northern Arizona accumulated in the Grand Canyon overnight. Without any wind to clear the fog out, it built up into a sea of clouds.

Then as the sun rose and warmed the air overhead, the clouds were trapped. Cory Mottice of the National Weather Service told the Associated Press that the weather event happens about once every several years, although a similar cloud inversion filled the Grand Canyon last year as well. Got a confidential tip? Looking to go to Waimea Canyon in the very early afternoon ish - is that too late - are we risking clouds at that time or do they usually appear later in the afternoon? Obviously there is no way to predict what the clouds will do on any particular day -- but in general if you want to visit the overlooks to the Canyon cloud-free -- you'd need to get there by 10am -- later than that and you are risking cloud cover plus the bus tours that pile up the roads and overlooks. Earlier is usually better. But you really never know! Last June, I drove my mother up to the look out sometime around noon. We walked up to the lookout and it was incredibly clear!

The year before in June, we drove up about the same time with my brother in law and his wife. That time, it was completely foggy and we could not see a thing. My husband was there in September this year with a friend and they went up later in the day after lunch and a hike and it was gorgeous! So it really is hit or miss with the clouds. Good Luck!

However, we look out the window first thing in the morning, and if it is clear, we get in gear and drive up there. No procrastination, just flat go!
